Click Here If You Want To Go Ahead And Check Out The Woodworking Plans I Got

Hi again.  Todd here,

Hope you guys are enjoying my website.  Don’t forget to check out my previous posts about how I got started searching for high quality cradle plans.  My goal is to help you guys out and save you a lot of time and trial and error.

In this post, I want to go more into the actual woodworking cradle plans I used to make my baby girl’s rocking cradle.  What I liked, what I didn’t and so forth.

Quick recap…..My wife remembered the old wooden rocking cradle her grandfather built for her and her siblings and how much she wanted the same for her own children.  Being the DIY woodworker, I agreed and went on a search for a set of cradle plans to build our soon to arrive baby daughter her very own cradle.

I tried a couple of the generic free cradle plans and they did not turn out so well. Actually, there weren’t so great at all.  The plan I thought was the best resulted in a rickety and unstable cradle.  My little girl was not going to sleep in that.

Ended up, the guy at the hardware store told me about some great high quality woodworking plans he used to make a toy chest.  He said they weren’t free but at this point I didn’t care.  I just wanted a good reliable set of high quality cradle plans, period!  Even though he didn’t use them to build a cradle, he said the best part was the site had thousands of great woodworking project plans and I couldn’t go wrong.

Man, was he right!  Not only did the site just have the plans I needed it had the thousands of plans he told me about.  Over 14,000 wood working plans to be exact.  Not only could I build a cradle, I could make anything I wanted.  After my wife got wind of it, she was like…”Great, you can get furniture plans make all our furniture and a nice gazebo for outside.”  I was like, big mistake!  :)   But, I was set for good.  My own personal woodworking plan library all in one place.

I found some nice really cradle plans to choose from and after my wife and I talked about which design was better.  I set off to hopefully build our baby’s cradle for the last time.

But, I’m sure you are wondering what exactly made me choose these wooden cradle plans?  Here are the pros and cons of my decision:

PROS:

  • I had more than 1 option for cradle designs all from one place
  • The cradle plans were very detailed.  Step-by-Step instruction which a novice like me needs
  • Extremely detailed diagrams that were labeled and matched back to the materials list
  • Plans gave me the type of wood and exact tools I would need.
  • Extensive library of over 14,000 woodworking plans!
  • Plans were the highest quality but not just designed for professionals.  Were easy for beginners like me.
  • Lots of extras came with the site:  Woodworking tips, woodworking videos, list of DIY projects, woodworking guides, etc
  • Instant access to plans at anytime plus a 60 day money back guarantee if I didn’t like the library

CONS:

  • Steep Price Tag!. A bit more than I wanted to pay.  But the whole library package was on sale at 1/2 off for $49That translates to less than .01 per plan.  I think it’s still on sale if you want to go see if it is.  I knew I wouldn’t see a woodworking library like this for that price again.
  • I did find some of the other plans were a bit hard to read but soon learned that was the exception and not the rule.  The cradle plans were absolutely perfect!

I have to thank that guy at the hardware store again for recommending such a great site.  Can’t thank him enough.

So, I take my new set of cradle plans out back to the shed to build the cradle we liked.  The plans were enough so that I could customize our cradle to our liking.  I ended up making an antique looking rocking cradle.  And, I made sure it was wide enough for our baby to fit.  KEEP THAT IN MIND!!

I was able to finish it up in one weekend and the cradle was fit, tight and durable.  My wife was so happy at the end result and we hope it becomes an heirloom just like the cradle my wife used.

Check out these pictures!  And how do you like the nice etching my wife did?  We love it!

What To Consider When You Choose Your Cradle Plans

Hi all…It’s Todd here…Hopefully you are here looking for the perfect set of cradle plans.  Now that I have completed building my daughter’s cradle, my hope is to help you in your choice of woodworking plans based on personal experience.

I made some mistakes in the beginning searching for the best cradle plan. And we all have our own preferences.  But let’s talk about some things you should consider when choosing yours.  My intent is to help you Save Time, Money, and a lot of Hassle.

High Quality

Choose High Quality Cradle Plans! What do I mean by high quality?  Use woodworking plans that give very detailed step-by-step instructions.  But also clear and concise diagram schemes that show you visually how the pieces fit together.  This is a must for the beginner woodworker but also good for the more skilled person.  The woodworking plan should list all materials that are involved. And show the precise measurements of each.  An added bonus is a nice list of all of the tools you will need.  But the best plans label each material piece (number or alpha) and reference back to the instructions.  I am very grateful to have found a great set of cradle plans that had all of this information.

Free Plans

Don’t use free woodworking plans.  I made the mistake of doing this twice. And ended up with an unstable cradle that I certainly would not want my baby to sleep in.  I am not saying ALL free wood working plans are worthless.  But, the free cradle plans I used lacked some of the things I just mentioned that high quality plans should have.  To me, you get what you pay for.  The free baby cradle plans were a condensed version that someone with limited DYI experience, like me, won’t find useful.  The end result will be an inferior cradle.  My personal recommendation is paid for high quality professional cradle plans that break things down step-by-step.

Consider The Look And Feel Of The Nursery

You may want to consider looking in a place where you can get cradle plans for different styles of cradles.  You will want to think about your nursery design first.  What style of cradle furniture will fit with that design?  An antique look or something more modern and contemporary?  An antique looking cradle in a contemporary looking nursery probably won’t work.  I also suggest you pick out your cradle bedding first.  Maybe your wife is a DIYer too and will want to make the bedding.  Choose the fabric for the bedding first and then the baby cradle plan that will fit the look and feel of the bedding.

I hope these tips will help you.  Just remember, choose high quality professional cradle plans to build your baby’s cradle.

Perfect Baby Cradle Plans Found. All I Had To Do Was Ask

Hi all….Todd here.  In my last post I talked about why my wife and I decided to have me build a new cradle for our expectant baby girl.  Being the woodworking hobbyist I am, I went on a search for the best cradle plans I could find.  We are talking a comfy cradle for my baby girl.  Not just any old piece of furniture.  High quality and safety were the top considerations.

My first 2 attempts at a cradle did not turn out so well. I will explain why in a later post.  There were so dang many free cradle plans on the Internet.  Thinking all things were equal, I just picked a handful to go by.  The end results were a wobbly and rickety cradle.  No way could my baby girl sleep in that.

I went back to the local Ace Hardware store to get more wood for the next attempt.(I like to support the local small business rather than the big box Home Depots or Lowes)  I was telling the guy who was helping me about my dilemma looking for a good set of cradle plans. As luck would have it, he told me about a library online where he got some high quality chest plans to build a toy chest for his 5 year old.

He said the wooden cradle plans he got were high quality.  And he had a blast building the toy chest because the woodworking plan was detailed enough that it made the process fun. He told me the site had woodworking project plans for lots of things and thought it would have some to build a cradle.

He wrote the website down on a sticky note for me, I got my wood and home I went, excited to look at the site.

I was amazed at all of the woodworking plans the site had.  I found and downloaded the best looking cradle plans from the website.  They had all the details I needed and got excited to try again!

Stay tuned for some upcoming cradle building tips soon!

How My Cradle Plans Search Began

Hello all!  It’s Todd here…….I figured I would start things off telling you how my search for cradle plans began.

My wife remembered the old cradle from her parents attic that she and her 2 brothers had shared when they were born.  She thought about her mom telling everyone how well each of them slept in that cradle.  But it was also an heirloom hand built by her grandfather as a gift for each of his grandchildren.

We took that to heart.  Not only were we hoping a cradle would help our baby sleep better but we also wanted it to be a wonderful memory for our own children. So now my search for baby cradle woodworking plans began.

This made me very excited as I consider myself a DIY plan type of guy.  I was also excited since this project was a cradle for my own children.  I try to be very careful and detailed when doing any sort of woodworking.  My search began for a perfect set of cradle plans I could use to build something I hope my children would enjoy.

I figured the Internet was the easiest way to find some baby cradle plans and it would be a piece of cake.  Well, the search was more difficult than I imagined.  I found a lot of free baby cradle plans but the majority of them were plain junk!  Most of the free cradle plans were not detailed enough with instructions.  Some would lead you to guess what the next step was and others did not have adequate diagrams to support what it described to do.

The frustrating part was I had to tear down 2 cradles I built.  They were rickety, not stable and didn’t feel safe for my baby to sleep in.  If this was to be an heirloom, structurally poor was not an option.

But I finally found a great set of the best cradle plans that worked for me!  But it’s time to call it an evening and will come back soon and tell you all about it………………..
